Why I Started LocalEQ

I’ve watched too many small business owners spend thousands of dollars on marketing that didn’t work — not because the marketing was bad, but because their foundation was broken.

It’s like running ads for a restaurant with a locked front door. The ads are great. The food is great. But nobody can get in.

That’s what’s happening to local businesses every day, and most of them don’t even know it.

Advertising With the Door Locked

I’ve seen it over and over. A plumber pays $1,500 a month for Google Ads. The ads are working — people are clicking. But when they click, the landing page takes nine seconds to load on a phone. By the time it shows up, the person has already hit the back button and called the next guy. That $1,500 a month is buying clicks that go nowhere.

A hair salon spends $800 on Instagram ads targeting women within 10 miles. Beautiful photos, good targeting. But their Google Business Profile still shows their old address from two years ago. So the people who see the ad, get interested, and Google the salon? They drive to a closed storefront. The salon never even knows it happened.

A roofing company hires an SEO agency at $2,000 a month to ‘get them on the first page.’ Six months later, they’re ranking — but for the wrong city, because no one checked that their website said ‘serving South Florida’ instead of ‘serving Stuart and Jensen Beach.’ They’re getting calls from Miami. Their work is on the Treasure Coast.

The Cart Before the Horse

Here’s the pattern I see: a business owner knows they need more customers. Someone sells them marketing. The marketing runs. Nothing happens, or the wrong things happen. The business owner decides ‘marketing doesn’t work’ and goes back to relying on word of mouth.

But the marketing wasn’t the problem. Nobody checked the foundation first.

It’s like a contractor building a beautiful house on a cracked foundation. The house looks great — until it doesn’t. Everything that goes on top of a broken foundation is wasted money.

Some real examples I’ve run into:

  • A landscaping company paying for Yelp ads, but they had zero Google reviews. People would see the Yelp ad, Google the company to check them out, find nothing, and move on.
  • A dentist office with a gorgeous new website — that wasn’t indexed by Google. Literally invisible to search. They’d been paying their web designer for six months and nobody thought to check.
  • A restaurant running radio ads with their website on it. The website had an expired SSL certificate, so anyone who typed in the address got a big red ‘THIS SITE IS NOT SECURE’ warning. How many people do you think stayed?
  • An HVAC company buying leads from Angi and HomeAdvisor at $40-$60 per lead. Their office phone went to voicemail after 4 PM. By the time they called back the next morning, the homeowner had already hired someone else.
  • A real estate agent spending $500/month on a CRM and email marketing platform. Her reply-to email address bounced. Every single ‘reply to schedule a showing’ email from a potential buyer went into the void.

None of these businesses needed more marketing. They needed someone to walk through the front door of their online presence and see what a customer actually sees.

Nobody’s Checking the Foundation

The problem is that most marketing companies make their money selling you the next thing. The next ad campaign, the next social media package, the next SEO retainer. Nobody gets paid to tell you your phone number is wrong on Google.

So nobody does.

I watched this happen for years while I was helping small businesses with their marketing. I’d get hired to run ads or build a website, and within the first hour, I’d find something broken that made everything else pointless. A Google Business Profile that was never claimed. A website that listed Tuesday hours as ‘closed’ when they were actually open. Three different phone numbers floating around the internet, two of them wrong.

And every time, I’d think: why didn’t someone check this first?

The Company I Wished Existed

I started LocalEQ to be that company. The one that checks the foundation before selling you the roof.

We start with an honest look at what’s actually happening — what people see when they search for you, what’s broken, what’s missing, and what’s costing you customers right now. Not what could theoretically be better with a $3,000 monthly retainer. What’s actually wrong today.

Sometimes the answer is a $129 fix, not a $2,000 monthly contract. And I’ll tell you that, because I’d rather have a client who trusts me than one who overpays.

Foundation First

My goal is to have as many businesses as possible get their foundation right — whether I do it or they do it. That’s why we offer the free Foundation First Check Field Guide so you can look for the cracks yourself. And it’s why our $129 audit is a real working document that shows you exactly what’s broken and how to fix it — not a disguised sales pitch that makes everything look urgent so you’ll sign a contract.

If you’re a small business owner on the Treasure Coast and you’ve been burned by marketing that didn’t work, there’s a good chance it wasn’t the marketing. It was the foundation underneath it.

If you’re not sure where to start, reach out. I’ll tell you what I’d actually do if it were my business — and if the answer is ‘nothing right now,’ I’ll tell you that too.
